Kyle Cooper is an American designer known for
his creative designs in title sequences for movies and motion
graphics. He has designed over 350 main title sequences and effects
for numerous films. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and often
spent his childhood drawing monsters, reading comic books, and
watching horror movies. After he had finished graduate school, he
worked at R/GA in New York City and then Los Angeles. Cooper then
co-found Imaginary Forces which became one of the most successful
creative agencies in Hollywood. After having to focus on the business
side of the design company, he decided to go back to his creative
side, in which in 2003, he left the company and founded Prologue which
he was able to work with smaller teams and focus on his designs if
title sequences.
His educational background consists of a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst studying interior architecture and almost failed, until he convinced his professor that he will never work as an interior designer. He then earned his Masters of Fine Arts for graphic design from the Yale School of Art, in which he studied independently with the renowned American modernist, Paul Rand.
Here shows two of his title sequences, he first one is his title sequence to the movie Iron Man, and the second one shows his title sequence of the movie Se7en.
Kyle Cooper is credited as the one who revitalized title sequences as an art form. His groundbreaking title sequence Se7en (1995) was what changed the way we look and think about title designs. It was quoted in the New York Times as “One of the most important design innovations of the 1990s”. He was a finalist for the National Design Awards, earned five Grammy nominations, seven Emmy nominations and two wins, and a win on the 81st Annual Academy Awards. He holds the position of Honorary Royal Designer for Industry from the Royal Society of Arts in London. He was the recipient of the lifetime achievement from the American Institute of Graphic Arts which recognized him for the unique and unexpected style for title sequences designs for film and television.
